Choosing Tomatoes to Grow in Your Vegetable Garden

"Hi! My name is Scott Reil and on behalf of expertvillage.com I will like to talk to you about vegetable gardening. Probably everybody's favorite vegetable to grow in a vegetable garden is tomatoes, and boy you could go into a supermarket and buy a tomato almost anytime of the year but there is nothing like the flavor you are going to get out of one that you have grown and raised in your own garden. With that said there is a lot of different tomatoes to choose out there so let's take a look at some of the different types of tomatoes and find the ones that are going to work for you in your garden. One of the first ones to look at and one that I think is a lot of fun for kids are the small cherry type tomatoes. This is one called sweet 100, I'm a big fan of. There is a lot of other ones out there, there is cherries, grapes, there are super-sweet 100 and sweet millions but the idea here is a lot of little tomatoes on a not so big shrub. It is a great way to get a lot of bang for your buck with the tomatoes. Another that is sweeping the nation is the patio type tomato. Patio type tomatoes are great for containers, they are also great for a smaller size tomato in the garden. They tend to be very prolific and you get a lot of fruit out of them not so big of a plant. So it is great one for smaller apartment dwellers or with people with unlimited amount of space. My favorites to grow are the heirloom tomatoes. I thing heirlooms are probably best because well one there is a great garden story behind them and garden stories are always a fun to tell to other people and two they are not breed for shipping, there are not breed for size they are breed for one thing: They are breed for flavor and the best flavor comes out. Every year in my garden I grow a brandy wine and I thing a lot of people would agree that brandy wines are the best flavored tomatoes out there. I new favorite that I have grown in the past couple of years is Cherokee purple. Now these are one of the ugliest tomato that you will ever lay eyes on it is also one of the very best tasting, and it is part of the reason you don't see heirlooms sold in the supermarket so much is they could be a little funny looking some times. But go ahead try some yellows, strips, gold tomatoes, purples, they have some of the best tomato flavor you are going to get out of there. Last but not least I always grow some pear type tomatoes for sauces, for growing for eating spaghetti sauces and things like that it really makes for a flavorful combination that you could add to almost any sauce and end up with a really nice product. So enjoy the tomatoes in your garden, have fun growing them and above all enjoy eating them."
