Winter weather can really put a damper on your plans. Wake up to a driveway full of ice and you might as well go right back to sleep. But what if you have plans that day? Or even worse, what if you have to go to your job? Ice might slow things to a halt in Central Texas, but up north, people are expected to go about their business as usual. But before you go anywhere, you've got to get that pesky ice out of the driveway.
In this series on the one winter chore that no one really wants to do, our expert will share his techniques for removing ice from driveways, sidewalks and stairs. Massachusetts resident Natan Pakman has shoveled a lot of snow and cracked a lot of ice, and in these free clips he will show you how. What equipment do you need for deicing? How should you clear away the ice once you have broken it up? And what about getting rid of the virtually invisible black ice? Watch this series and you will find out all about deicing around your home.
"So today we'll be talking about how to deice your driveway and sidewalk. And we'll be using these three tools. The first is a pick and we're going to use that to crack large pieces of ice. The second is a regular shovel which we'll use to shovel those pieces of ice. And the third is sand. Traction sand which we'll use when we need some extra traction but it's not worth icing or shoveling. So as you can see there's different thicknesses of ice here. There's really thin ice here which will be good to get sand on it in order to get cars out. There's thicker ice with snow packed on here which we can use the pick and shovel to get out. And over there on the sidewalk there's a combination of thicker ice and thin black ice which we'll put sand on."
