Potato salad, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, corn on the cob, and even green bean casserole are essential to the menu for your next cookout. But your propane grill didn't survive last winter? No problem, just clear some room in the backyard and make a barbecue pit, where you can cook over open flames.

"Hi! I'm Mark Sullivan for Expert Village and today we are going to learn how to build a barbecue pit. The first thing you will need to determine is where you want your barbecue pit. You will want to have it located some place away from buildings, away from things that can catch on fire, having a clear area around your barbecue pit. The next thing you are going to need to determine is what is your lifestyle. Do you want something sophisticated or do you want something kind of rugged, primitive, outdoorsy, guy kind of barbecue pit where you and your friends can sit around and maybe discuss world events and cook your favorite foods and drink your favorite libations. So we are going to build a guy kind of barbecue pit today. It is pretty simple. We are going to dig a hole into the planet and then surround the hole with hexagonal blocks which we've purchased at our local paving supply brick supplier. The next thing that you will need to determine is that you don't want to have a lot of ash flying away into your neighbor's yards so the way that your barbecue pit faces is important also. You want a little privacy also around your barbecue pit."
