Series Summary

The barbecue pit is on of the earliest methods of slow cooking meat for whole pork barbecuing, but also used for beef and chicken as well. Much different than grilling, the barbecue pit slow cooks and smokes meat so it is tender and delicious. Today there are many modern alternatives to the traditional barbecue pit but the real thing is something to be savored. The idea is to make an oven in the ground. A barbecue pit is filled with dry wood to make a bed of hot coals and wet wood is used to create a smoky flavor while it cooks.

So, how do you build a fire in a BBQ pit? What type of wood do you need, and where does it go? In this free video series, our expert will answer these questions and more. Learn to build a better fire for your barbecue by finding out what wood to use first, and what shape to build it in. Learn when to add your food and how to keep from getting burned. Follow these step-by-step instructions and your backyard BBQ pit will be roaring in no time!

"Hi! I'm Mark Sullivan for Expert Village and today we are going to show you how to build a fire in your backyard barbecue pit. The first thing you want to consider when building your backyard barbecue pit fire is safety. Always safety first. Make sure that you have no areas that can catch fire, that there is no gasoline nearby, no cars nearby so you are not going to be catching anything on fire. Make sure you have some type of pit or barbecue grill which can contain fire. Make sure that you have a garden hose nearby. So any way, make sure that the wind is not too high. If it is a really high wind, you don't want to be having a fire and also many places you do need to check with the local fire department and even get a permit in different places to build an outdoor kind of fire.
