Prepping Furniture for Wood Veneer Patch

"Now I've cut a piece that seems to match around our damage but while I was cutting it out my repair piece cut in half. Veneer does this. It is very brittle and some times it will just crack off like that but it is no problem because we'll just put these two pieces in like that so they match right up. We're going to take our patch and lay it over the damage, putting it back together like that, I am going to lay it over the damage, hold the patch down very very firmly. Let's just pretend that this patch is not in two pieces. The next step is going to be to take a craft knife like this with a number 11 blade. It is a very sharp blade and you can only make two or three cuts with it before you have to change the blade. You need that to be very sharp so this next step is very painstaking and sometimes it doesn't work the first time. You just have to be very patient and take the craft knife and holding the patch down very securely and cut around the edge. You don't want to try to cut the veneer in one cut. This is a series of scratches. You scratch, scratch, scratch around the patch until you get kind of deep in it and then you take a small chisel like this and lift out the piece that you cut around. You just want to get gently underneath it and lift it out. Then you'll have a form here that is the form that you cut out and you are going to apply your patch in there. It is a little bit trickier this time since we are having to do it with two pieces but it should work out o'kay."
