A broad definition of floral design is the art of combining plants, flowers, and cuttings into an aesthetically pleasing array. These arrays, however, can take vastly different forms, from million-dollar nature preserves, to hotel lobbies, to a homecoming wrist corsage. Floral design is thousands of years old and spans many times and cultures. It has been employed when forming massive works such as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon (one of the seven wonders of the ancient world), Central Park in New York City, and for decorating graves in many cultures. Smaller floral designs can easily be learned online and created at home.

"Hi, my name is Julie Kay Robinson. I'm here on behalf of Expert Village. Today, we're going to be designing one dozen roses. The first step in creating a bouquet is how to select the container. I have a number of different containers on my table and I'll explain why I'm going to pick the nice tall one. First of all, this is a platter. It's going to be a little bit low. We're going to want our arrangement to be nice and big and showy because the roses have long stems. This one wouldn't be a good choice because it's smaller and it's got more contemporary lines. This container is pretty but it's not the best because it has more of a Mediterranean feel. This container, as well, has real contemporary lines and the opening is not quite big enough for a dozen roses. So, today we're going to use this container. It's got a nice wide opening. It'll be very nice for a dozen roses. We can make it nice and tall and it will suit our purposes very well. This is how you select a container for a dozen roses."
