Arc Welding Types & Uses

" Hello! My name is Mac and on behalf of expertvillage.com I am here to discuss arc welding. Now this machine that I am standing beside here is a multi-process welding machine. It can do many different kinds of arc welding and I am going to give you a short overview of some of these different types of processes. For instance, plug this welding cable in and you can do shielded metal arc welding or stick welding. This is commonly used nowadays in construction industry, pipe welding, structural steel welding. Oddly enough this is even used for underwater welding. They water proof these electrodes and use them under water. That is one type of process. Another very commonly used process is MIG welding or flux core welding. They are a semiautomatic process, you use a coil of wire, instead of a stick welding electrode, you pull the trigger, for instance point this and pull the trigger and the wire comes out melts into a weld puddle. Very, very widely used in manufacturing. Another type of weld process that this welding machine can do is TIG welding (tungsten inert gas welding). Plug this is in, set the process controller to TIG welding and you can weld with a sustained electric arc and this is a non-consumable tungsten electrode. The arc jumps off of this on to the ground to work piece and melts the metal. You add filler wire with your free hand and this is a process that is used extensively in the food and beverage and pharmaceutical industry for welding stainless pipes. It is also used quite a bit in the nuclear industry to do high purity welding on nuclear piping systems. Like I say, these machines are particularly valuable because they do multiple processes in the one machine."
