"When it comes to actually making a proper MIG weld, there are different techniques to be employed in handling the MIG gun. Some people like to use a drag technique, which means they will pull the trigger on the gun, once their shield is in place over their eyes and they will move the gun backwards like this, depositing weld metal on the work piece. This works very well, the other method that is commonly employed is push where the angle of the gun is so and you actually push the metal, ahead of the wire as you go along like this. Now myself, I prefer a modified push method, I tend to put the gun in straight like this and move it across at an angle so that I can actually see the puddle. In my opinion, it is extremely important that the welder be able to see the puddle at all times; you must not let the puddle get in behind the gun where you cannot see how it is being laid down whether you are getting cold lap or porosity or even if you're on the right joint. So modifying one of these techniques to suit yourself is very important but what is most important is that the weld be physically sound and cosmetically good looking."
