Tuning a Block Plane

"Hi, this is Jon on behalf of Expert Village. In this video clip we'll be tuning the block plane. The first thing we're going to do is use our blade adjustment and we're going to retract the blade all the way into our tool so it won't stick out at all. Next we'll take a permanent marker and we'll color in the bottom or our tool. I like to use red because it stands out. Next I'm going to take a piece of 180 grid sand paper and place that on the surface that I know is flat. Here I'm using a table saw then I'm going to take my block plane and I'm going to rub that across my sand paper. This is going to show me any areas that are low on the sole of the planer. When I flip that over I can see there is a couple of areas here at the front on my edges then maybe just a small amount right here that are low. I'm then going to continue with the same procedure until all of the red goes away. Once almost all of my areas of red have gone away I'm going to move from a 180 sand paper to a 220 and I'm going to move to a 240 and so on an so forth until it's nice and smooth."
