Summary: How to correctly connect wires and attach a ground wire to a new electrical outlet; learn these electrical wiring tasks and more in this free home improvement video.
"Hi! This is John on behalf of Expert Village. In this video clip, I will show you Part 5 for replacing an old outlet. On your outlet, you will notice there is a larger side and a smaller side. The smaller side always has the black wire, which is the hot wire, connected to it, and the larger side always has the white wire, which is the neutral wire, connected to it. Another way to remember it, if you look at it there is brass terminals on one side, and there are silver terminals on the other side: black to brass, white to silver. So there are two separate ways you can remember it. One black goes to the smaller side, which is brass, black to brass or 2, white goes to the larger side or white to silver. Down at the bottom here, if we flip it on its side, there is a green screw which gets the ground wire or the bare wire. Now we are going to go ahead and connect the wires into the correct sides of the outlets. Next we are going to make a small hook on the ground wire, which is the bare wire, and we are going to connect that to the ground terminal which is the green screw. After that, we are going to screw that in so that is tight. Lastly, we need to go ahead and push all these wires back into the box and screw the outlet back in."
