Series Summary

Humans are creative beings, and have been known to build a few things in their time. Since the first spark of inspiration hit men and women, they have searched for easier, faster, better ways to realize their ideas and solve their problems. It is reckoned that in the Stone Age the first tools were born, and by extension, machines and technology. Though the basic principles behind altering physical matter haven't changed much, some amazing advances have been made in tool technology. For instance, with the advent of consumer power tools, mankind has the ability to increase productivity and complete more projects in less time. A router is one of those tools. Its basic operating principle involves using a shaped metal bit to form a decorative edge, cut a joint or groove, or create a radius on a piece of wood. The shape of the cut is determined by the type of bit used; with the many combinations of bits, and woodcutting patterns called “jigs,” the number of applications that a power router can be used for is nearly limitless. In this free power tool video series, learn how a fixed base power router works. Our expert will demonstrate how to properly use this woodworking tool, including general shop and tool safety tips, what you need to know before making a cut, installing and removing the bit, setting cut depth, and determining the direction of feed for the router.

You also want to make sure that you are keeping any bystanders, children, visitors away while you’re operating any tools. Any type of distraction can really cause you to lose control and possibly injure yourself. In addition, you want to make sure that the floors around your work area are kept clean at all times as well."
