Summary: Learn how to install the backing plate to install storage shelves in your garage in this free DIY home improvement video.
" Hi! This is John on behalf of Expert Village. In this video clip, I’ll be showing you how to install our backer plates. First I’m going to measure up 2 feet and put a mark. I’m also going to put a mark at 4 feet and 6 feet. I’m going to do the same in a couple of spots along the wall that I’m putting my shelving on. Next I’m going to grab a 2x4 and just start a screw. Make sure you don’t put it in too far where it goes out the other side. Go ahead and put in a couple more screws in just to start them. Next I’m going to put a screw in at the end of each board only part way. When I hold my board up on the wall on my lines, I’m going to put these screws all the way in. Now, since the screws sit at the end in the beginning of the board, I know that behind that there’s going to be a stud so I’m going to screw this board into the studs, which is going to hold it up. And I’m going to do the same for the other side lining it up my lines that I’ve drawn. We’re going to continue this for each of our boards. In addition, I’m going to put a few more screws in there along where the studs are. Once are back plate has been installed, we are ready for our front plates. "

on 8/2/2008 Jon, this is great simple design and trick to building storage shelves. However, I think you over simplfied the placement for the anchoring screws on the backer plate. I assume the randomly placed screws are to just hold the boards for you in the wall until you can come back and find the studs. Shouldn't you find the stud spots ahead of time and mark accordingly?
