"Okay! Now that we know a little bit about the sanders, we need to talk about going through the grits. What I mean by this is that we are going to progressively go from a courser sandpaper to a finer sandpaper throughout the process. The grit refers to the number of abrasive particles per inch of sandpaper. So the lower the grit, the rougher the sandpaper. Here we have 3 examples. This is the course sandpaper that I will be using, here is a medium grade sandpaper that I will be using and finally the fine grade sandpaper. Note the textural difference in each. To begin the project I've chosen a course grade of sandpaper made from aluminum oxide which is a nice wood working sandpaper. If you are doing a piece like this where there is a stain and varnish already on the wood, course sandpaper is the one to start out with. It will effectively sand off the old finish and enable us to sand down through the old stain and finish so that we reveal fresh wood. "
