Seasoning a Fire for Wood-Burning Fireplaces

"Hi! This is John. Now we are going to be talking about seasoning of firewood. What that primarily means is firewood that has been dried out. Typically it takes about six months to a year depending on your climate once you have chopped a piece of wood, say a tree trunk or a limb for seasoning to occur. What this means is that the wood is dried out. You do not want to try to put green wood in your fireplace; it will be very difficult to ignite and to have a fire. What you look for when a wood is seasoned is these cracks right here that are going along the wood. This will show you that the wood is dried out. All you need to do is hit the axe or whatever you will be using to split the wood near these cracks and the wood will separate and you will have a nice good piece of firewood."
