Summary: Learn how to cut an electrical outlet hole for an outlet box in this free educational video series.
"Hi! This is Jon on behalf of Expert Village. In this video clip I will be showing you how to cut an electrical outlet hole. Before we make our cut, we need to check a couple of things. The first is to verify that our outlet hole is where we want it and it is level. Next we need to double check that our depth gage is set to the correct depth for our drywall. The last thing we need to check is to make sure that our tool is working properly and doesn't look like any part on it is broken. When I start my cut, again I am going to start it kind of towards the center. I am going to move it to the outside then I am going to follow my line around. I am going to make sure to cut on the inside of the line as close as I can get to the line. "

on 3/30/2009 Your video provides useful directions for using a cutout tool and you identify some of the problems that arise when using such tools: they can wander a bit and unless you are very careful you end up with too large a hole. I am not as steady as you are, so my freehand holes tend to be very rough sided and irregular in shape.
I have had both problems on projects, but recently ran across a set of guides that eliminated my errors. It is embarrassing when I make too large a hole and have to install an oversize switch plate. Also, it can be costly to make repairs when I make a mistake on a finished wall.
A company, Cutzout tools, produces a set of guides that include levels, so your box is always level, and make it easy to cut the exactly sized hole you need. Since the guides protect the underlying wallboard you don't ever have to worry about needing to repair the finished wall.
Cutzout has posted a video on YouTube at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJAIizMTDjc or you can see their whole lineup of spiral saw, cutout tool guides at: www.Cutzout.com. A few dollars spent to prevent mistakes can save money and time.
