"Hi! I'm Drew Finn and I am here for expertvillage.com. I am a professional home inspector and I am going to show you how to install a ceiling fan today. Now we are going to finish installing the box in the ceiling. Remember it has to go on a structural support on the ceiling and we need good heavy structural screws. I've got one in already and we just run the screw up in and mount the box securely. You are going to have that fan which is heavy when it is moving. Okay, we get that screw in there good, snug. But it has to be able to support at least 50 pounds for some of the fans. The one we are putting in is a little less than 50 pounds but we've got to make sure that it is secured really well for safety. "

on 8/2/2008 He talks about "structural support," but fails to discuss what that means in different situations. It appears that he is screwing the box directly to a joist or solid ceiling. If this is drywall with space above it, a bracket that extends between joists/rafters must be used to carry the weight.
