Stripping Electrical Wires to Install an Electrical Outlet

" Hi I am Drew Fendy, master home inspector. I have been inspecting for over 24 years. Today we are going to describe how to install an electrical receptacle for Expertvillage.com. Now we are going to learn how to strip a wire. It is not as funny as it sounds but we will take the wire strip that we had before. It has got a little barb inside it. So when you slide it up over the wire it will slice it slightly. So I would like to go up a little over 7 inches out there. You squeeze it, pull it and it makes it a little slit down the center. Sometimes you have got to do it twice. Pull it. That was a good cut. So now it is got a slit in it. You can just slide the finger down, pull it back, pull the insulation off the neutral conductor, I mean other ground. Click off the excess insulation to discard that . Now, we have the three wires,your hot,your ground and your neutral. We are going to get a GFCI. There is a strip gauge on the back that shows you how much insulation to take off. So, let us see, it is not that much so we take it off here, squeeze it with these cutters and then just slide off insulation part right off so we have an exposed conductor. I go down to compare it to the strip gauge and it is a little long so we will nip that off and we do the same with the white. To actually engage on this type, we want to put it on this line. Line side, not the load side. The line side there is a strip over it, just leave that if you are going to add another receptacle down the line protected by this GFCI. So we are going to insert the black into the brass side so black the brass will burn your ass is the old saying and so that slides in and then you take your screwdriver and tighten up the knot."
