"Hi, I’m Grady Johnson representing Expert Village.com. A few tools that you are going to need for this job to pop off the hinges you are going to need a hammer and a nice big strong screwdriver. To pull the screws out I use a screw gun. Here is our hardware we are going to put on the door. We are going to use this block to shape down the edges. Now we have a utility knife which is always good as a cutting tool. You are going to need a caulking gun. For making a surface nice and smooth I recommend using 220 grit sand paper. The most important tools that a painter always has in his kit are these three items. That is his painting rag, because what makes you a great painter is not getting paint all over the place. Now when a speck of paint flies somewhere and if you get it up right away it won’t be staying there. Okay. This is a five-in-one tool that is a graduation of old parents used to use putty knives. You want a stiff blade; that is what opens your paint can), you can cut with it and there are all kinds of things you can do and this is our main tool for scraping, which is one of the biggest jobs of prepping. Now whenever you scrape you do bring up a lot of dust so you are going to have to keep a little duster witch you. There is a lot of different kinds of brushes. This is one of the brands that I prefer but there are hundreds brands of brushes. Today we are using a nylon polyester blend because this is a latex paint. Also for cleanup we are going to use a wire brush and wire brushes are also good for bumping out really rough areas that you can’t get with your sand paper. I always recommend when you are painting that you use some type of a drop cloth that a little bit of thickness to it. That way when the paint goes through it is not going to soak through to the bottom. Now in this case, I prefer to use a lot of cardboard pieces. You can find these in old boxes that you can break up and cut up around your house. These cardboard pieces are great for doing doors and when the paint hits them it is not going anywhere. The main thing is what leaks through so whenever you have a thinner drop cloth, like this one is a little thinner than I like I would double that up. That way you don’t have that problem. This acryclic is washable but it is also able to clean up before it dries. You will be able to go ahead and wash it after it dries in and will have a nice thick coat. We are going to put a good primer on there. These primers are water based as well and this will probably actually kill all of the mildew and kind of things that are underneath the door that we are really not seeing. One of the most important things to do whenever you are doing this work is to put a solid on the door and then sand that pout. That is going to give you the best results. I recommend you always use a family bucket. There are a lot of different kinds and I have seen as big as 5 gallons but what you really want to do is to use something that is about a 2 to 3 gallon bucket that you can work out of. It is never really a good idea to paint out of the can. It is a very small opening for getting your brush in. It screws up your brush bristles and also it is always very difficult when you have too much paint to be able to keep your brush steady. Also you never want to fill your brush up to the top. We will go into that when we get into the painting. "
