Sharpening a Hand Lopper

"Hi, my name is Willie. I'm from Carson's Saw shop here in Eugene, Oregon. I've been sharpening tools here for twenty-five, thirty years and I'm here with Expert village today. This time I'm going to sharpen a hand lopper. And we have the two edges on it that we need to cut. The curved edge which is in here and then the cutting edge right here. So I'll go ahead and change wheels on this machine here. I select the wheel according to the type of grit and the thickness and the behavior of how it operates. This tool here, I use, one that"s a sixteenth of an inch thick and fairly fine. It gives me good control over it and I also use that one for doing knives and anything needs a finish on it. And I need to get in between these without jamming or having kick backs so with a fine wheel I can get right in here. Get that edge going. That good shiny edge there. Now this one, since this wheel's real fine it makes a good serrated edge so if I go across this wheel it's going to vibrate enough to where it's going to put in serration. Look at that real close. That's a good thing to have on a hand lopper cause it keeps the stick or whatever you're cutting from slipping. So that's kind of an improvement over the original. So that one's done except for a little bit of honing which the common hone stone helps on that too. Make sure they don't grab each other. If one chews into the other you have to look and find that spot de burr it so that it doesn't do that. That one's ready to go."
