"This is salvia leucantha, or Mexican autumn sage. In this case, we’re are not really going to cut the plant, we are just going to remove its spent blooms. Some plants should not be cut hard in the heat of the year because it stresses them too much, and you might lose the plant in the process of that. So in the case of this one, we’re just going to remove it’s spent blooms so that it has a nice appearance; keep it nice and tidy. If you have a branch that’s coming up too tall for what you want the plant to look like, then you can lightly prune. But otherwise, that’s all that’s done to this one right now. Its show time is in the fall. And so we want to make sure that we have plenty of plant here so that in the fall we’ll get all the color that we’re expecting to get. "
