Designing a Gazebo's Height

"Hi! Welcome back to Expert Village. My name is Charlies Folkman and today we are going to continue building our gazebo. Now one thing to consider when designing our gazebo is the height. Now usually you want the inside height to be 2 feet taller than the person that will be hanging out there. So we will take me for example. I'm 6 foot tall so we are going to go ahead and do an inside height of 8 feet. Now the actual entire structure height is going to be 8 ft. 5 1/2 inches and I will show you right now how I go that. Okay we will start at the bottom, the base. The bottom 2 x 4 has the skirt, then we have the sheet of plywood, then we have the 8 ft. beams and then we have the 2 x 4 across the top. Now a 2 x 4 is not actually 2 inches by 4 inches. It is actually an 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches so that needs to be taken into consideration. This is standing up on end so that is going to be 3 1/2 inches. Now a sheet of plywood is a half inch thick, our beam is 8 foot and this 2 x 4 across here is actually laying down so that is only 1 1/2. If we add all this together, we are going to get 8 foot 5 1/2 inches. "
