Series Summary

Welding is the process by which metals are joined or united. Usually welding involves melting the metals themselves or some filler material into a molten 'weld puddle' that then cools and hardens to form a strong joint. Until the end of the 19th century, the only welding process was forge welding, which blacksmiths had used for centuries to join metals by heating and pounding them. But later, more advanced ways of joining welding became possible like arc welding, oxyfuel welding, and resistance welding. But whether using energy sources like a gas flame or electric arc, or more advanced sources like lasers or electron beams welding remains a dangerous but extremely useful fabrication process.

In this free video series, our expert Chris Ramirez will show you how to make and weld yard art. He will teach you about all the tools you will need to make your yard art, teach you a bit about yard art in general, and teach you how to be safe while doing your welding. Chris will teach you how to tack the material, cut the material, and weld it together. Chris will also teach you how to salvage material from other sources, and talk about the advantages and disadvantages of polishing and painting. He will even show you how to do some final touches for your new yard art!

Video Transcript

"Hi my name is Danny Ramirez and on behalf of Expert Village I will be welding yard art. I'm going to talk about the tools that I will be using today. These are some of the tools I will be using a hammer. The hammer would be basically for hitting and shaping the metal if I need to. I also would be using a angle grinder. I can use it to cut, to grind and that is about it for that. I would be using a torch for melting, shaping, heating up so I can bend the metal easier. I might also be using a drill so I can make holes in anything, I can put attachments on here for a wider wheel or for a hole cutter. If I choose to. I would also be using a vice to clamp down the material. So I can bend anything I need to or to hold down something if I need to grind it. I would also be using a welder today to tact and weld the material together for the finish product."
