"This is Richard with expertvillage.com. An explanation, definition of a legal shot with a game of 8 ball, a player must always contact their group of balls first on any given shot. After contact with their ball, there's a few things that must happen. Either pocket a ball, you go into your ball in any ball, your object ball or your opponents ball must contact a rail or your cue ball must contact a rail. Failure to do so will result in a fall meaning ball in hand to your opponent. Also in a game of 8 ball you may find yourself kicking at balls. Once again once you shoot into the rail and contact your ball, the same provisions must be made. You must either contact your ball, pocket a ball or contact a rail after contact with your object ball."
