"This is Richard on behalf of expertvillage.com. I'm going to talk about a couple of common illegal situations that occur during the game of 8 ball. One is when shooting at the 8 ball provided that you've already cleared out your designated balls and you come into the situation when you're shooting at the 8 ball and you completely miss the 8 ball. Meaning that you make no contact with it at all with the cue ball, that is considered a fall. Another thing that can happen there is if you're shooting at the 8 ball and you scratch, that is going to be considered a loss of game regardless of whether the 8 ball is pocketed or not. Another situation that may occur is jumping the ball of the table meaning off the table meaning that it falls off the playing surface onto the floor and out the door or somewhere in that area. If the ball pops up, lands back on the playing surface it's still considered to be in play and there's no fall in ball. But, if a ball jumped off the table, the ball is respotted. If more than one ball is jumped off the table, they're are respotted in numerical order. If the 8 ball has jumped off the table, this would be considered a loss of game. Any ball jumped off the table at any time is a fall, then your opponent approaches the table with cue ball in hand."
