How to Tie Lightermans Hitch

"The lighterman's hitch is a nice hitch to use if you're going to be able to wrap your rope over the top of something if it is not a closed in space, like a post or something. I'll show you what I mean here. As you can see, is I have already got my hitch with my open end on it like so. And what I'm going to do, is I'm going to take my rope, and here's my working end over here, I'm goin to take it and I'm going to wrap it over my end twice, like so, bringing it back down the way that it would come, and then I'm going to loop it under like this and then I'm going to take this loop that I've created and wrap it over my standing end and then back over my loop like that. Now you can see I've got this done here, but this isn't secure enough, because if I pull on this, all of this here will unravel. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to wrap this one more time around my standing end and then back around the post, and then back down again. That way, it creates and nice secure, tight bend like so. Let's do this one more time, just so we have it down. We're going to take our line, and we're going to wrap it over our post, wrap it once and twice, as you can see and I'm going to take my standing end here (let's get a little bit more here) I'm going to take my working end, rather, I'm going to wrap it around my standing end and loop it over, pull my slack here and wrap it once again there and then back over and around and ideally I will have a little bit more to wrap it completely around and over - there you go."
