"Now we have to look at the business end of the cue. That's the tip, the most important thing about the whole cue. The tip is important because that's what's contacting the cue ball and going to be able to impart whatever kind of spin or action that you need to put on the cue ball. Unless your tip is well rounded, in other words, unless it has a curvature or crown to it, it's not going to be able to contact the cue ball properly. What it will do is, if it's been flattened and it's got a square shoulder to it, anytime you get off center of that cue ball, it's going to just hit it with the point contact and it's just going to skip off the cue ball and not going to do you any good. So, what you really need to do is keep a constant curvature on your cue. Most players will prefer either the curvature of a nickel or the curvature of a dime. And, that's actually what the old timers used to gage the curvature on their poll cue is to take either a nickel or a dime and hold it up to the tip to see whether or not it was conforming to the proper curvature."
