on 8/2/2008 "Lethal damage" refers to any damage that would destroy a creature, including combat damage. So indestructible creatures can't even be destroyed in combat.

"Hi, I'm Mike Lopez with Expert Village, and today we'll be discussing artifacts from Magic the Gathering. And now I'm going to go over Darksteel Gargoyle. Darksteel Gargoyle is very, very impressive artifact creature Gargoyle card. It is an uncommon, as we see here, and it cost you 7 to put in play. Well Darksteel Gargoyle costs you 7 to put in play, but you're only getting a 3/3. Well the reason why you're only getting a 3/3 is because he has two abilities. Once again that will take it to 5 Mani cause or 6, but one of the ability is really cool. First off, you're going to get flying, so he is a 3/3 flier, which is a very big flier. And more importantly, he is indestructible, which means, you cannot destroy him, you cannot do destroy artifact on him, you cannot do destroy creature on him, and you cannot deal him lethal damage, which is direct damage, that will kill him off. The only way you can get rid of him is to remove him from the game, or deal enough combat damage to kill him. So you're getting a flying 3/3 that is indestructible for 7."
