"Hi this is Mike Lopez with Expert Village. Today we're going to be discussing Magic: the Gathering the card game. Now we are going to discuss, life link. Life link is when any card, especially any particular creature cards, enchantments, and sorceries are linked directly to your life. Now here we have Venerable Monk. He comes into play. He's a 2/2 and when Venerable Monk comes into play you gain 2 life. That is an example of life link. Another example of life link, is here we have, Highway Robber. Who is also a 2/2, but when he comes into play, not only do you gain 2 life, you can have a target opponent lose 2 life. More examples of this are cards that say, when starting creature, an example: Venerable Monk, deals damage to a player, then you gain that much life. Another example is when a certain enchantment goes into a graveyard and you have target opponent lose life. All these are examples of non-direct damage. These are static ability damages, but life link itself is a multiplex static ability. Which means that there are many different versions of life link. So, you have to be really careful with your cards and the cards you play."

on 8/2/2008 Ok, this is all wrong. Lifelink doesn't mean any card that gives you life. It's a specific keyword ability, and neither of those cards has it. See section 502.68 in the Magic Comprehensive Rules.
