on 8/2/2008 Angelic Wall first appeared in the Odyssey expansion in 1998. So it's far from being "one of the first walls ever put out."
Also, defender does not allow blocking multiple creatures. Defender simply means that the creature can't attack.

"Hi this is Mike Lopez with Expert Village and today we are going to discuss and show you the white color from Magic: The Gathering. Alright, here we have one of the basic walls, one of the first walls that was ever put out in Magic, Angelic Wall. It is one and a white. O-four wall. Once again, walls cannot attack, however, this wall is a defender wall, it is a defender flying wall. Which means that this creature can block flying. This is a wall that can block flying. White is one of the only colors that has a wall that can block flying actually. It is very important to play walls because of the defensive fact that you can play this on the second round of the game and it can block all of the flying or little creatures that are going to come out up until round three or four where you are going to start seeing the bigger creatures come out. In which case you are either going to have to bolster him up or he is going to get killed off, but this basically, once again, prevents you from getting hit by all of those little creatures and defender also means that he can block as many creatures as you can throw at him. He blocks multiple creatures."
