Pinning Side for Side Zipper

"Hi, I'm Karen, for Expert Village. Now I'll show you how to place the zipper and pin it in place. Here's your garment with the seam allowance, pressed nicely, and for a side or an overlapped zipper installation, you want to take the front of the zipper and place it down on top of the seam allowance. Now, to decide which side you want your garment to flap over the zipper, (whether it be the left side or the right side), I'll put it on the left side, and you want to know the placement of where the zipper should end from the top of the garment. It should be marked in your pattern, but just be aware that you need to know where the zipper is going to end. Now, for a center placement, you would place the zipper so that the teeth are placed right on that center seam. But for an overlapped position, you want to place the teeth beside the seam line, like this. And we're going to pin the zipper to the seam allowance, so you want to fold your fabric closed again, and just leave the seam allowance sticking out like that. And, again, this is the front of the zipper, we're going to place that down on the seam allowance and you put the teeth beside the seam allowance and pin in place to the seam allowance. Now just pin that in place, and, checking as you go, that the teeth are riding right along that seam allowance - not on the middle of it - for a center position, you would place the teeth on the middle, but for a side, flap-over, you're going to place the teeth beside the seam allowance. And pin the zipper tape to the seam allowance that's overhanging. And pin it all the way down so it's secure and you can open it up like this and see how that is going to flap over."
