"Hi, I'm Karen for Expert Village. Here I'll show you how to install a conventional zipper (regular zipper) with an overlap. This is used for side dress seams or skirt seams. What we'll be needing is a regular zipper foot, your garment pieces (two pieces) a regular zipper or conventional zipper and some pins. O.K. to start we're going to baste our garment together where the zipper will be installed. So the length of the zipper and usually you sew the seam up with a regular stitch and just baste where the zipper is going to be installed. You want to place your fabric on the machine using a 5/8 seam allowance or whatever your pattern requires and you want to set your stitch length to a basting stitch so the largest stitch that you can do on the seam on the stitch length and do not knot the threads just baste that down the length of the zipper and then the remainder of the seam you can change the stitch length back to a reqular stitch length about 2 1/2 and just knot it a little and continue down to the bottom of the garment.
