"Hi! I'm going to talk to you now about first thing to do when you are lost. First thing if you even think you are lost, is don't panic. Do not panic because you could do something irrational that could endanger you or any of the people you are hiking with. If you do decide that you really are lost and you've calmed down, pull out your map. Few people who actually pull out the map and check it ever stay lost for long. If you are still on a trail, you can still see the trail blazes, don't worry about it. Just check the map. You probably actually know where you are. You are just worried about it. Take the map out, get your compass out, you can orient the map to wherever you are with your compass and you can figure out where you are in the mountain range. So first thing, don't panic. Second thing, check the map. If you are really lost, check the map and try to figure out where you are. If you can't, stay put and stay dry. That is really very important. If you really don't know where you are, don't wander around because it is going to make it harder for people to find you if they need to come do so. And remember bring that survival kit with you. It's going to make it a lot nicer. You've got your whistle when you need to call for help, you've got matches and everything else too in case you need to build a fire. So remember, stay put, stay dry, check your map, have your survival kit and just stay calm. Everything is going to be okay. Someone will come find you. Don't worry. You are going to be safe as long as you follow those simple rules. "

on 5/31/2009 Some good tips here. Only thing I'd be worried about is people using matches to light a fire in the forest. But I get your point though - the rescuers would easily see the flames and smoke ;) Good video.
