"There are three basic segments in the game of chess. Opening, middle game and end game. In the opening game, the players are primarily concerned with the placement of their pieces and getting their pieces quickly into good, well developed positions. The end game of course is the final wrap-up of the match. And by that time, the essential difference is there are far few pieces on the board and the character of the game changes somewhat. Now between those two of course is the section called the middle game. Now in chess, the openings can to some extent be learned and to a lesser but to some extent also, the end game, but the middle game is much more difficult to describe in those terms or to learn by rote as it were, but I will be going into that a little bit more fully in my next step."
