"It's now time to talk about the so called elements of Chess. It is believed that victory or defeat depends on the player who has the stronger position in these particular elements. The first element is the element of time and space. Space is pretty obvious. It basically means that the more you control the board the better, because obviously, the more moves that are open to you and the more potential to develop your game. Time is refers here to the need to get pieces out in a timely fashion, and in Chess this is very important, particularly in the opening. Any sort of higher level, you players have to keep level with each other in development; otherwise they're at a great disadvantage, and if they do fall behind one move during the developmental stage, that is being described as being down one tempo."
