"Hi, I'm John Olsen for Expert Village. Today we're talking about flint knapping. We're talking about different types of stones. What I have here in my hand is a piece of obsidian from Glass Buttes, Oregon. It's very prolific up there. It's a volcanic derived rock. It's cooled fast, if it's cooled slow it turns into basalt. Obsidian cools very fast when it's being spewed out of the Earth. It has a rind on it. It's kind of a dull color. When you break into it, it goes shiny. It's got lots of interesting colors. It's a very good rock to use in flint knapping because of its classy quality. You go back East, you get into things like horn stones. This is I believe, Indiana horn stone. It's quite hard, very different to work than obsidian. But it has some very good qualities. It's extremely durable and it takes a little bit of finesse to make things. Many different kinds of stones can be used. Right here is a little leaf blade. This is made out of jasper and it's actually been manipulated through heat treating, makes it a little easier to chip. Here's a piece of stuff, I believe it's from Georgia. It's another type of chart. Petrified Wood. This is a local stone, which I call bog. Which comes out of the Chinle formation. It's really nice to knap and it is what the locals used in the area where I live. It's a wonderful stone. This is a piece of Burlington from over in Missouri, in that area. Another very nice stone to work."
