Circular Knitting on Double Pointed Needles

"Hi, I'm Jeanette White on behalf of Expert Village and Piper's Quilts and Comforts in Sugarhouse, and today we're doing circular knitting on double-pointed needles. To begin with, I casted on forty stitches, and then we're going to take the--and I put them all on one needle--then we're going to take that and divide those evenly on four needles. Now I've already knit one, two, three needles, and I'm going to knit this last one and then show you how you connect this into a circle. This is a really great way to do circular things that are small, like gloves and socks, and a lot of knitters just prefer to do any circular knitting this way. This looks extremely awkward, but once you get the hang of it, it's really easy and very fast, and you can do very, very small circular things. Now, the biggest problem with doing this on this very first round is that you twist it. If you get a twist in this, then you are going to have to unravel all of it and go back to the beginning. So what we want to do is locate what I call the spine of the knitting, and it's actually the selvage of the cast-on, and you can see that goes right around here, and I have no twist. If I had a twist, it would look something like this. So I've now made this so that I have no twist, and I am going to divide this into four even parts, and it forms a box. So I'm going to bring my knitting to the back here, I'm going to slide this down this way, get my tail out of the way, and you can see how this is forming a box here. Now I need to insert a ring onto my needle, so that I know where I have begun and where I have ended. And I'm going to turn this around, like so, and I'm going to knit one stitch, and then put my needle on--or my ring on. If I put it on at this end, then it's just going to fall off. And now I'm just going to start knitting along. And that's how you do circular knitting on double-pointed needles."
