"Hi I'm Jitin Tuli on behalf of expertvillage.com and now I'm going to tell you about about strategies involving the rook. Once you control a open file with rook you can often use the rook to penetrate your opponent position. In the following example the position looks quiet easy but it is the whites move. White takes the opportunity first to move the rook to the open file. Black can not safely count by moving his rook to the same file because white would immediately capture it. It is definitely not to challenge the white rook which could show off its strength by moving to the 7 rank in order to attack the black pawns. Once there the white rook attacks to pawns simultaneously. Try as you might black can only defend one of them in positions like this we say that the white has a good group while black has a bad one. It sounds almost simplistic but masters always try to make sure that the pieces are better then the opponent pieces. "
