"Joanna Joseph for Expert Village. I use graph paper in the planning stages. Every alphabet, it's helpful because it's lines, and every alphabet has its own ratio of black and white in the letter. So, say I was going to do an italic letter. It's four to four and a half nibwits high, the letters are. So, one, two, three, four, five, there's five. So four and half or four should be about here. There's that letter "a". Okay, we're writing "easy does it,? I can tell my pen's getting a little dry. Refill. I love the sound of the pen on the paper. You can try it in a different alphabet and that alphabet is called Carolingian. It was established in the time of Charlemagne. This one's got very high ascenders. Short, squatty little lowercase letters, but tall ascenders. They call them ascenders and descenders."
