"The concept of retreating, let's say my Pokemon has taken so much damage that I want to get it off my active and put something else out. If you look on the bottom part of your Pokemon card, the bottom part of my card gives me my retreat cost. My Wailord costs four energies to retreat. What that means is that I have to take the energies off of my Pokemon when I move it back to my bench and put it into my discard pile. My Pokemon no longer has the energy to fight and I have moved it off my bench. The thing about moving your Pokemon to your bench when you retreat is all damage counters stay on your Pokemon but it loses all special conditions such as burned, poisoned, or asleep. You have to always have your other Pokemon back up. I am going to choose my Lapress and move him up to the active state. He is now going to be the Pokemon I fight with."
