"If you choose to bid 52 at opening seat, again this is one system, people can use whatever system they want, that promises 20 meld. That's a 20 meld bid. If you open 53 you are showing 30 meld. What would 30 meld be? Well you've got 15 in runs here, you've got 10 for aces which are 25, and do you have the requirements? Yes you've got 29 here in this marriage, 4 points for this marriage here, another marriage here so you do have the 30 meld and you feel comfortable in declaring that as 30 meld. Some players will say that the meld needs to be all non-run cards. That is something that you need to agree on. If you take up the 15 points in diamonds you are limiting the points in meld. It is just very important that you are on the same page. The middle bids in the 50's are traditionally the junk bids or the competing bids so if you have an option where this person is going 51 and you are going 52 so you have only over called one and that shows 10 meld and if you jump to 53, that's a two increment jump so now you are showing a 20 meld and you might even see the auction go up here. If these person bids 52 and he bids 53 and I jump to 56, I'm showing 30 meld and I'm probably showing a very strong desire to play the trump suit."
