"The best opening lead for the defense is leading next. The chances are because next suit has once less trump. The partner may have the opportunity to trump that. So, a next lead is generally a standard lead. One thing that the defense does want to avoid doing. Say that spades were named trump, we don't need to have the whole hands laid out and he leads the ace of clubs. Let's just say it walks through. Let's just say that the queen falls on it, right. So the defense is already scored one. What are the chances are that the defense is going to get the king through. Not very good. I mean did he really keep two low club losers? Probably not. If anything you're going to allow his partner to trump and for him to take a discard. So avoid double leads in the same suit. There are a few occasions when the defense should lead a trump. It doesn't happen that often, you rarely if ever should be leading trump for the opponents. However, let's look at; well let's look at an extreme example. Well it's really not an extreme example, but, it's a good representative example. Supposing that the declarer has picked up the jack of trump, okay. Let's just say that he happens to have three trump in his hand."
