The Purpose of Passing Cards in Hearts

"The purpose of the pass is to improve your hand and not necessarily to burn a particular opponent. Now, what you want to do in Hearts, is you pick up your and and you look at your hand and you determine where the particular strengths and weaknesses of your hand lye. For example, we know, that that is a bad card. That is just a very bad card. You don't want that thing in your hand unless you have at least, preferably, four other spades with her. You really want the queen guarded. If you only have three with her, particularly three weaker spades, then you're risking the probability that somebodies just going to drive it right out of you. So, understand again, that you don't keep the queen of spades in your hand unless you sufficient backer or protection for her. There's thirteen spades in the deck and if you only have three with it then somebody with four spades will just drill it right out of you. Another consideration is either this or this. These are bad cards too, because they are capable of capturing the queen of spades by herself. So if your dealt the ace and a small or the ace and two small spades. Ditto with the king, you still want to get rid of them. If you have four though, you have an opportunity to either get a lead coming to you from the left side or maybe the queen will come out or maybe somebody else won't have as much strength in the suit and their short and they'll have to change suits and you'll be able to get rid of it. The big going concerns in each hand are the ace, king, queen of spades. As far as the hearts are concerned, also when you pick up your hand, one of the ideal situations in a passing hand is to get rid of a suit. You want to void yourself out of a suit. Because, why do you want to get rid of a suit? Because if you can bring your hand down to three suits, you have an opportunity to discard. Discard hearts, maybe discard a queen of spades. So creating a void, and we'll cover a little bit more on passing strategy as well. Finally, this heart suit is, this is a typical, it's not a typical heart suit. If you're dealt these hearts, those are pretty good hearts. They're pretty safe, you're not going to take too many points with those hearts. But if you're dealt a heart suit like this, this a safe heart suit, this is a bad heart suit. Some people will pass this whole suit, some people may pass two of these and keep the high one just in case somebodies going for a suit. Remember, a suit like that can catch you eight, ten, twelve points. Again look at the queen of spades, look at bad side suits, then look at the hearts."
