"Hi, this is Gary Zyer for Expert Village. When playing Gin Rummy, there are a few variations in the rules that should be decided before you start playing. What are some of these variations? Well, for starters it should be decided whether you're going to allow knocking or not throughout the game. If there is no knocking, then the game is Straight Gin and the player can only win when he presents a Gin hand. The game is usually scored by playing the best of seven hand series. In Straight Gin and Gin Rummy, the dealer will sometimes give the twenty-first card to the opponent instead of placing it face up in the discard pile. In that case, play starts by the opponent having to discard one card, because he now has eleven cards in his hand. We said that the standard rules are that Ace is low and King is high. Some play that Ace is high and low. How would that affect the play? That would make the following melds acceptable. Here we have a Queen, a King, and an Ace of spades with the Aces high. Here we have a Queen, King, and Ace of hearts where the Ace is also high."
