"EMIL LAMPRECHT: Now, if you liked doing the flair, another flair-like trick you can do is the thumb spin. In some ways, this is easier. In others, it's much harder. Now, the reason it's easier is because the spin is just one spin, and it's a very local movement. You don't have to bring your arm out, or twist your wrist in anyway. The reason it's more difficult is because you don't have as much control over it. In a flair, at all times, is the club clamped between two fingers. With a thumb spin, the club is literally rolling around the back of your hand and around your thumb, hopefully well enough so that you then catch it again. It's almost like a throw. The thumb spin is very cool because it can lead into other surface spins which are very difficult, almost impossible to do in pattern, but are fun ways to play with clubs. Now, to incorporate the thumb spin in a pattern, it's the same as you would a flair, starting first with your double up before the thumb spin. You can also do it with a straight throw and also do simultaneous like that, which is very difficult, but possible. I suggest if you want to get really good at thumb spins, practice doing it blind in various combinations, get very good at doing it consistently if possible. And the way you do that is just by pushing the club along with the top of your pointer finger. Practice doing it in both hands alternately, simultaneously, both one spin and multiple, and then, practice doing it in blind. And another thing you can add to it is if you flip the club backwards, and hold it by the bulb, you can add surface spins, like so. So there's many different combinations, enhancements you can do. Throw them together with a couple flairs, and you can get a very fancy couple of seconds."
