"EMIL LAMPRECHT: Now, if you've started to learn 4-4-1 or straight-straight-vamp or 5-3-1--otherwise known as pattern stacks or high-middle-low--you've started to use a type of throw called the vamp. Now, the vamp is very useful and can be used for hundreds of tricks, especially with higher numbers. For audiences, you might want to think about, well, where else can the vamp happen? If it can happen in front of you, you can probably do it behind you, under a leg. You can do it in strange combinations. You can even do it behind your head if you're very quick. Now, it's harder to do these vamps in different places because you need more time. But if you like performing or showing off, which juggling is basically for, it's a way to make things a little more interesting without ever having to change the trick. If you're doing a number of 4-4-1s, it might be interesting to suddenly throw in a vamp under the leg...or a vamp behind the back. 5-3-1 is the same. Now, for all cases, where you do a vamp in a different location and in front of you, your throws before will need to go higher. You'll notice that my regular 4-4-1 is much lower than my 4-4-1 from under the leg. My 5-3-1 is much lower than my 5-3-1 from behind the back. This is just relative to the amount of time your hands need to make the vamp; it also takes much more control. So, again, if you're having trouble keeping your high throw in control for doing this vamp, practice your high throws."
