How to Light Pet Photography Shoots

"When you're in the studio you can have a lot more control over their light. There are some neat tricks that you can do to bring out your pet. Let's say, for example, that you have a whole family and they want their dog in the picture, or their cat even. You might want to get them together and then have the animal sit at their feet, and just by lighting alone you can tell your viewer that the pet is the most important part of this picture. Like spot-lighting the animal and then exposing for that light so that maybe the other people's feet or other things go darker. It's almost like doing a little mini-vignette on your animal, but still allowing some of the other information to be included in the frame. Those can be really fun pictures. By highlighting the animal, or making the animal the brightest part of the picture, you're telling the viewer that that is what they really should be looking at in that picture.
