"I usually start by putting in one or two letters into the grid. And let's suppose in the spot up here I want to put the letter T. I've got to use a common letter to start with. I don't want to get into the zeds and q's which are going to be hard to find words to fit. So we've got the letter T in this one. Now that is in two words. Both of which are long words. Both 15 letter words. So let's see what we can fit into the crossword there. What word I would choose to go in there would depend on whether I am doing a regular definition crossword or a cryptic crossword. If it's a definition crossword then I would want something that can be easily clued with a simple definition. If it's a cryptic crossword on the other hand I need to find something that I can play with the words. So I might look for words contained inside another word."
