"Hi my name is Austin Harmon but out here I'm known as Forest Evergreen. And I'm here on behalf of ExpertVillage.com to teach you about the game of Amtgard. So now I'm going to show you what it's a the pole arm style combat is. With this particular weapon the only striking legal surface is this padded portion here. This is what we call courtesy padding and this is just a thin layer of padding so if you do catch a hand or something on this it doesn't hurt like if you're catching the raw bamboo. This just has tape over it to help with the grip so this is courtesy batting for safety purposes. This is the only strike legal portion so if my opponent can step past this part there's really not much I can do, you know, other than block and hope."
