Poster Collecting: Bartering

"Welcome to starting a poster collection. Today we're going to talk about the difficulties of bartering. One of the beauties of the poster world is, the majority of people who are actually selling and dealing in posters usually have a list of wants of their own. And they have a lot of things that they want and sometimes you will have things that they want. And so instead of buying a poster, you can actually barter for a poster. It's not uncommon for, for you to have two posters in your collection, and you contact, or for you to have four or five posters in your collection where you have duplicates of them, and you contact somebody and you want the Filmore poster, which has Jimmy Hendrix as the headliner. And you will say to that person, "I'll take your Jimmy Hendrix poster, but I can't pay you cash. I'll give you the five or six posters." And you list them out to that person. "Will you trade me this for that?" Dealers are always willing to trade because they know that I may be able to sell the one poster to you for a hundred and fifty dollars or two hundred and fifty dollars or five hundred dollars. But if you're willing to give me six items for my one, I may get a thousand dollars out of that, versus the five hundred I would get for this one. And I'd rather have the thousand dollars. And you, you don't want those posters anyway and you're not a seller, you're a collector, so you're actually trimming down your collection and making your collection much more manageable. And at the same time, adding a prime piece to your collection. So you're moving into the positive as well."
