Manicures started about 5000 years ago in India using henna as decoration; a form of mud that brings out the pigment in your skin's surface to make designs on hands. It is a treatment of the nails, hands or both that usually involves the shaping and painting of the nails as well as attention to cuticles and hangnails. It is a very soothing procedure that both men and women enjoy because there are several treatment options available. Sometimes the manicurist will attach acrylic nails to the existing nail so that it can grow without worry of being broken and also to lengthen the look of the existing nail until it is able to grow out. This became highly popular in the 20th century and today is a multi-million dollar industry.

"Hi my name is Theresa and I'm here with Raina, and we're going to demonstrate to you in the steps to a perfect manicure. I'm going to start off first with polish remover. Everybody needs to take off their polish on the first step to giving themselves a manicure. Raina has a little bit of base coat here so we're just going to remove that. There are two different types of polish remover. And I'm going to use the regular one because she doesn't have acrylic nails. Again, I'm going to get the cotton right here. Put it between my nails. My two fingers. Because if I had nail polish on and was doing it on somebody else, I wouldn't want my polish getting messed up. There you go. Apply the polish to the cotton. Start with the pinky. Hold the cotton on the nail, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and rub it off. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and rub it off, and rub it off. Okay, you can go through all those nails doing that. Until all the polish is completely taken off. If you need cotton you can go ahead and get another one. And take off the polish remover. This is the first step in to taking off, into giving yourself the right manicure. It's taking off the polish with the polish remover."
